The Gift of the Emperor is an 1898 short story by E. W. Hornung. It opens with the King of the Cannibal Islands making faces at Queen Victoria, and a European monarch setting the cables tingling with his compliments on the exploit, causing indignation in England that was not less than the surprise, since the thing was not so common as it later became.
