When the quiet Little Vestry of St. Matthew's Church becomes the scene of a double murder, Scotland Yard Commander Adam Dalgliesh is called to investigate. The victims are an upper-crust minister and a neighborhood derelict, their deaths raising many questions. Dalgliesh uncovers a complex web of motives, focusing on a half-burnt diary and a violet-eyed widow who is pregnant and full of malice. As he works through the clues, he seeks to understand how these two men, so different in status and background, ended up dead side by side. The story is a mystery novel by P. D. James.
