About “Monuments of power”
Scattered across southern Africa, North Korean monuments honor the emergence of independent nations. Many southern African states, freed from colonialism or white rule, have turned to the North Korean state-owned Mansudae Art Studio for propaganda and monument design. This collaboration blends African nationalism with North Korean socialist realism. The book Monuments of Power examines the National Heroes’ Acres in Namibia and Zimbabwe alongside the Revolutionary Martyrs’ Cemetery in North Korea. It reveals the significant but little-known support the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea provided to African liberation movements. Published in 2019, the work offers insight into the DPRK's influence on post-colonial public history in Africa.
