About “A Man of the People”
A Man of the People is a 1966 novel by Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe. The story is told by Odili, a young and educated narrator, who recounts his conflict with Chief Nanga, his former teacher. Nanga enters politics in an unnamed fictional 20th-century African country. Odili represents the changing younger generation, while Nanga embodies traditional West African customs. The novel is a satirical critique of political corruption and societal change. The book ends with a military coup, mirroring a real-life coup led by several Nigerian army officers in 1966.
