About “Along Came a Spider”

A missing little girl named Maggie Rose and the brutal murder of a family of three in the Washington, D.C. projects are part of a series of crimes committed by a serial kidnapper and murderer known as the Son of Lindbergh. Gary Soneji, a mathematics teacher at a private school in D.C., is the killer. He is intelligent, charming, and has a reputation as "Mr. Chips" among his students. He kidnaps Maggie Rose and her friend Shrimpie Goldberg, despite the protection of their Secret Service agents. Alex Cross, a homicide detective with a Ph.D. in psychology, investigates the crimes. He lives in the D.C. ghettos and has a personal life with two children. Jezzie Flanagan, the first female supervisor of the Secret Service in Washington, is involved in the case. She has a mysterious past and a dangerous lifestyle. Cross and Flanagan develop a forbidden relationship as Soneji, who has outsmarted law enforcement, continues to commit crimes. The novel follows Cross as he tries to outwit Soneji, a psychopath with a split personality. The story ends with Soneji still at large and the threat of more victims.
