Jonathan Kellerman's novel follows psychologist Alex Delaware and homicide cop Milo Sturgis as they investigate the disappearance and subsequent return of young lovers Dylan Meserve and Michaela Brand. The couple is found battered and terrified after being carjacked by a masked assailant, but doubts arise about their story. A psychological evaluation reveals Michaela may be truthful about her emotional state, but her lies remain unexplained. The case appears closed until Michaela is murdered, and Dylan disappears. Delaware and Sturgis uncover more questions and a series of similar crimes, leading them to search for the truth behind the couple's ordeal and a growing pattern of violence in Los Angeles.
