LAPD homicide detective Milo Sturgis calls on psychologist Alex Delaware for a case as baffling as it is brutal: a disfigured corpse with no face or hands appears in an upscale Los Angeles family's home, with no spilled blood or evidence of a struggle. The Corvin family claims not to know the John Doe, though their cooperation seems oddly guarded, as does that of their creepy next-door neighbor, a cartoonist with an antisocial attitude.
