Anita Blake returns to St. Louis, trying to live a normal life despite her roles as a legal vampire executioner and a U.S. Marshal. She has lovers, friends, and children, and attends school events. A vampire from her past, believed dead in an explosion, reappears. This vampire is the Mother of All Darkness, the first vampire and dark creator. She has reached out to Anita in St. Louis, where Anita loves most. The Mother of All Darkness plans to control Anita and all American vampires. She believes the trio formed by Anita, master vampire Jean-Claude, and werewolf Richard Zeeman holds enough power for her to regain a body and move to the New World. However, the body she wants is already taken. Anita must face a new kind of body sharing, not related to the bedroom.
