Anthony Gethryn, an ex-Secret Service agent working for a newspaper, is assigned to cover the murder of Cabinet minister John Hoode, who was bludgeoned with a woodworker’s rasp in his country home. Gethryn believes the prime suspect, Hoode’s secretary Alan Deacon, is innocent and must convince the police that others involved do not have solid alibis. This is the first case in a new series of classic detective novels from HarperCollins, featuring Gethryn as the central character. The 1924 novel by Philip MacDonald is presented as a Detective Story Club classic, with an introduction by crime fiction expert Tony Medawar, who explores the author’s overlooked contributions to the Golden Age of detective fiction.
