After Eren helps humanity reclaim the town of Trost from the Titans, he falls into a three-day coma and wakes in shackles before Erwin Smith, leader of the Survey Corps. Smith believes Eren's father's research holds the key to the Titans' origin and wants to retrieve it from Eren's childhood home, deep in Titan territory.
