When the corpse of a shady industrialist who owns a local football team is found shot and stabbed with a Parmesan knife, Italian police inspector Aurelio Zen is called to Bologna to lead the investigation. Recovering from surgery and dealing with personal issues, Zen expects a simple case. However, when a famous university professor is shot with the same gun shortly after insulting a celebrity chef, the case becomes complicated. The investigation involves a student of semiotics and a mysterious immigrant from Ruritania. A flamboyant private detective, Tony Speranza, also becomes involved. The story is intricately plotted and features a range of unique characters, offering both humor and serious observations about modern Italy.
