4 standalone books

Archibald Joseph Cronin (19 July 1896 – 6 January 1981), known as A. J. Cronin, was a Scottish physician and novelist. He is best known for his 1937 novel The Citadel, which follows a Scottish doctor who works in a Welsh mining village and later faces disillusionment in London. Cronin drew from his own experiences as a medical inspector of mines and a doctor in Harley Street. The novel highlighted issues in British medicine and contributed to the development of the National Health Service. Another of his well-known works, The Stars Look Down, was inspired by his time among miners in the North East of England. His 1935 novella Country Doctor was the basis for the BBC series Dr. Finlay's Casebook, which ran from 1962 to 1971, with a follow-up from 1993 to 1996. Several of his novels were adapted into films.
