Kōbō Abe, born Kimifusa Abe, was a Japanese writer, playwright, photographer and inventor. Born in Kita, Tokyo to a physician who taught medicine, he was raised in Mukden, Manchuria, returning to Japan in 1941. He earned a medical degree at Tokyo Imperial University but failed his medical exam and was barred from practicing medicine.
