Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri was a medieval Arab poet and thinker from Ma'arrat al-Nu'man, in the Emirate of Aleppo. He was an Arabic philosopher, poet, and writer whose religious beliefs and philosophical worldview have been the subject of historical and modern academic debate. In his self-defensive treatise Zajr al-Nabeh, al-Ma'arri affirmed his orthodox Islamic faith and clarified that his verses were not a rejection of Islam but critiques of religious corruption and ignorance.
