Alejo Carpentier y Valmont (1904-1980) was a Cuban-French writer and musicologist who significantly influenced Latin American literature. Considered one of the fundamental Spanish-language writers of the 20th century and a key figure in Latin American literary renewal through his concept of "lo real maravilloso," his novels include El reino de este mundo (1949), Los pasos perdidos (1953), El siglo de las luces (1962), El recurso del metodo (1974), and La consagracion de la primavera (1978).
