Aleksander Fredro was a Polish poet, playwright, and author associated with Polish Romanticism during the period of partitions by neighboring empires. He faced criticism from some contemporaries for his light-hearted humor or alleged immorality, which contributed to years of literary silence. His plays were largely published and popularized after his death.
