Alexander Nikolayevich Radishchev was an 18th-century Russian author and social critic. He is known for his 1790 novel Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow, which brought the tradition of radicalism in Russian literature to prominence. His critical portrayal of socio-economic conditions in Russia led to his arrest and exile under Catherine the Great. He was exiled to Siberia until 1797. Radishchev was the grandfather of painter Alexey Bogolyubov.
