Alexander II was Emperor of Russia, King of Poland, and Grand Duke of Finland from 1855 until his assassination in 1881. He is known as Alexander the Liberator for issuing the Edict of Emancipation, which abolished serfdom in Russia. He was crowned in 1856 and was succeeded by his son Alexander III.
