Alexis Charles Henri Clérel, comte de Tocqueville, known as Tocqueville, was a French aristocrat, diplomat, political scientist, and historian who lived from 29 July 1805 to 16 April 1859. He is best known for his works Democracy in America and The Old Regime and the Revolution. He wrote about the social conditions and relationship between individuals, the market, and the state in Western societies. Tocqueville was active in French politics during the July Monarchy and the Second Republic. He retired from political life after the 1851 coup and later wrote The Old Regime and the Revolution. He was a classical liberal who supported parliamentary government and was skeptical of extreme democracy. He described himself as a leftist.
