Ali ibn Sahl Rabban al-Tabari was a Persian scholar and physician who wrote one of the first Islamic encyclopedias of medicine, titled Firdaws al-Hikmah. He spoke Syriac and Greek, languages central to the medical traditions of Antiquity, and transcribed their knowledge in meticulous calligraphy. He was the teacher of the physician and alchemist Abu Bakr al-Razi and was known for his controversial religious and scholarly work. Al-Tabari lived from 838 to 874.
