Allen Say, born James Allen Koichi Moriwaki Seii in 1937, is a Japanese-American writer and illustrator. His name is written as Seii (清井) in Japanese. He is best known for Grandfather's Journey, a children's picture book that won the 1994 Caldecott Medal for illustration. The book details his grandfather's voyage from Japan to the United States and back again, and it is an autobiographical account of Say's own experiences with moving during his childhood. His work often features Japanese and Japanese American characters and their stories, with several of his books containing autobiographical elements.
