Andal, also known as Kotai and Nachiyar, was a Tamil poet-saint and the only female Alvar among the 12 Alvars who patronized Vaishnavism during the Bhakti movement. She is considered an avatar of the earth goddess Bhumi, an aspect of Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu. Andal was raised by Periyalvar in Srivilliputhur, where she developed a deep devotion to Krishna. She is affiliated with the Sri Vaishnavism tradition of Vaishnavism.
