Andrea Camilleri was an Italian writer from Sicily who studied literature and later stage and film direction, directing plays by Pirandello and Beckett and TV productions including Inspector Maigret. His first novel appeared in 1978, and after a 12-year pause he resumed with the best-seller La Stagione della Caccia in 1992, going on to sell about 10 million copies.
