Andrew Dickson White was an American historian and educator who co-founded Cornell University and served as its first president for nearly two decades. He was known for expanding the scope of college curricula and had a career in politics, including service as a New York state senator. White was also appointed as U.S. ambassador to Germany and Russia. He was born in 1832 and died in 1918.
