Anthony Gilbert was the pen name of English crime author Lucy Beatrice Malleson, born in London, where she lived her entire life. She authored 69 crime novels, 51 of which featured her most prominent character, Arthur Crook, a London lawyer known for his vulgarity and contrast to the aristocratic detectives popular at the time. She also wrote more than 25 radio plays, several of which were broadcast in Great Britain and overseas, and her thriller The Woman in Red was adapted into a film titled My Name is Julia Ross in 1945. Gilbert was an early member of the British Detection Club and contributed to its survival during World War II.
