Antonio Pigafetta

1 standalone book

Antonio Pigafetta was an Italian scholar and explorer from the Republic of Venice who joined the expedition to the Spice Islands led by Ferdinand Magellan under the flag of King Charles I of Spain. He served as Magellan's assistant and kept a detailed journal during the voyage, which included the first recorded documentation of the Cebuano language. Pigafetta was one of the 18 survivors who returned to Spain in 1522 after the circumnavigation of the world, having been part of the original group of approximately 240 who set out three years earlier. His journal remains a primary source for historical knowledge of the expedition.
