Ariano Vilar Suassuna was a Brazilian playwright and author who was the driving force behind the creation of the Movimento Armorial and founded the Student Theater at Federal University of Pernambuco. He authored several plays, including Auto da Compadecida and A Pedra do Reino, and was considered one of Brazil's greatest living playwrights of his time. His works often focused on the culture and popular traditions of the Northeast of Brazil. He received an honorary doctorate at a ceremony held at a circus.
