Arthur Hobson Quinn was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his B.S. and later his Ph.D., and also studied at the University of Munich. He began his academic career at the University of Pennsylvania as an instructor in mathematics and later in English, eventually becoming Assistant Professor of English and later holding the title of Welsh Professor of History and English. He served as Dean of the College from 1912 to 1922 and was recognized as an authority on the history of American drama and literature.
