Asa Gray was an American botanist who was considered the most important American botanist of the 19th century. His work Darwiniana (1876) was seen as an explanation of how religion and science could coexist. Gray believed in a genetic connection among all members of a species and opposed the ideas of hybridization within one generation and special creation that did not allow for evolution. He supported Darwin's theories while advocating for theistic evolution.
