Sir Basil Henry Liddell Hart was a British soldier, military historian, and military theorist who wrote influential military histories and advocated for the "indirect approach" as a strategy to avoid the costly frontal assaults seen in the First World War. He promoted the use of fast-moving armoured formations and his pre-war publications are known to have influenced German wartime strategy. He was accused of prompting captured German generals to exaggerate his role in the development of blitzkrieg tactics, and he contributed to the promotion of the Rommel myth and the "clean Wehrmacht" argument during the Cold War.
