Augustin Barruel was a French publicist and Jesuit priest who lived from 1741 to 1820. He is best known for his book Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism, published in 1797, in which he proposed a conspiracy theory linking the Bavarian Illuminati and the Jacobins to the planning of the French Revolution. His work contributed to the spread of anti-masonic and anti-Jacobin sentiments in the late 18th century.
