Barry Holstun Lopez was an American essayist, nature writer, and fiction writer whose work focused on humanitarian and environmental themes. He spent over 50 years traveling to more than 80 countries, writing extensively about diverse landscapes such as the Arctic wilderness and the relationship between human cultures and nature. He received the National Book Award for Nonfiction for Arctic Dreams and had Of Wolves and Men nominated for the same award. His writings appeared in publications including Harper's Magazine, National Geographic, and The Paris Review.
