Bashō Matsuo

Matsuo Bashō was a Japanese poet of the Edo period who became the most famous poet of his time. He was recognized during his lifetime for his work in the collaborative haikai no renga form and is now considered the greatest master of haiku. He is also well known for his travel essays, including Records of a Weather-Exposed Skeleton, written after a journey west to Kyoto and Nara. Bashō was born in 1644 and died in 1694.
