Benedict Anderson was an American political scientist known for his 1983 book Imagined Communities, which examined the origins of nationalism. He was a polyglot with an interest in Southeast Asia and held the Aaron L. Binenkorb Professorship at Cornell University. Anderson's work on the "Cornell Paper" challenged the official account of Indonesia's 1965–1966 events, leading to his expulsion from the country. He was the elder brother of historian Perry Anderson.
