Betty Friedan (1921-2006) was an American feminist writer and activist. She graduated summa cum laude from Smith College and began graduate study in psychology at the University of California before turning to political activism and the cause of women's rights, eventually publishing works such as The Feminine Mystique (1963), informed by her critique of Freudian theory.
