Betty Smith, born Elisabeth Lillian Wehner on December 15, 1896, in Brooklyn, New York, was an American author who lived until January 17, 1972, in Shelton, Connecticut. She is best known for writing four bestselling novels in the 20th century: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1943), Tomorrow Will Be Better (1947), Maggie-Now (1958), and Joy in the Morning (1963). Both A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Joy in the Morning were adapted for the screen soon after their publication. Prior to her success as a novelist, Smith was also a well-known and respected playwriter. She collaborated on many plays with her third husband, Robert (Bob) Finch.
