Brennan Manning was an American author, Franciscan Friar of the Third Order Regular, priest, contemplative, and speaker who led spiritual retreats for people of all ages and backgrounds. Born in New York City, he served in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War, later studying at Saint Francis University and being ordained a Franciscan priest. He joined the Little Brothers of Jesus, living a contemplative life in France and Switzerland, and spent time in a remote desert cave. He returned to the United States in the 1970s, overcoming alcoholism and beginning a writing career that produced more than ten books.
