Brian Randolph Greene, born on February 9, 1963, is an American physicist recognized for his work in string theory. He is a professor of physics and mathematics at Columbia University and serves as the director of its Center for Theoretical Physics. He also holds the position of chairman of the World Science Festival, which he co-founded in 2008. Greene co-discovered mirror symmetry, a relationship between two different Calabi–Yau manifolds. He also identified the flop transition and the conifold transition, demonstrating how topology can change smoothly within string theory.
