Carl Peter Thunberg was a Swedish naturalist and pupil of Carl Linnaeus. He traveled to southern Africa and Asia, where he collected and described numerous plants and animals new to European science. He is recognized as "the father of South African botany" and "pioneer of Occidental Medicine in Japan." Thunberg lived from 1743 to 1828.
