Where to start with Carlos Castaneda
Begin with The Teachings of Don Juan, published in 1968, which introduces the author’s apprenticeship under the Yaqui sorcerer don Juan Matus. This book establishes the foundational experiences and perspectives that define the series. Proceed in publication order through the subsequent books in the series: A Separate Reality (1991), Journey to Ixtlan (1991), The Art of Dreaming (1993), and The Second Ring of Power (1977). Each book continues the narrative of Castaneda’s training and evolving understanding of shamanistic knowledge. The series unfolds chronologically as it was published, reflecting the progression of his experiences and insights. The standalone works are not part of the series and are not recommended as a starting point.
