Cecil Day-Lewis was born in County Laois, Ireland, in 1904. He was raised in London by his clergyman father after his mother's death in 1906 and later educated at Sherborne School and Wadham College, Oxford. He worked as a teacher and wrote poetry, publishing crime fiction under the pseudonym Nicholas Blake, which included the Nigel Strangeways series. He served as Poet Laureate and held editorial roles in publishing, and he was married twice, first in 1928 to Constance M King and later in 1951 to the actress Jill Balcon.
