Kamo no Chōmei was a Japanese author, poet, and essayist who witnessed a series of natural and social disasters. Having lost his political backing and being passed over for promotion within the Shinto shrine associated with his family, he turned his back on society, took Buddhist vows, and became a hermit. He is known for his essay Hōjōki, which is representative of the "recluse literature" genre. Alongside the poet-priest Saigyō, he is considered a representative figure of literary recluses of his time.
