Charles Perrault (1628-1703) was a French author who laid the foundations of the fairy tale genre. His collected Contes des fées (widely known as the Mother Goose stories) include Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Puss in Boots, Tom Thumb, and Red Riding Hood. Born in Paris to a lawyer, he became a lawyer himself in 1651, later serving Colbert and being elected to the Académie française in 1671.
