Charlotte Vale Allen was born on 19 January 1941 in Toronto, Canada. She moved to England from 1961 to 1964, where she worked as a television actress and singer, and later returned to Toronto before emigrating to the United States in 1966. In 1970, she married Walter Bateman Allen Jr. and settled in Connecticut, where she began writing and sold her first novel, Love Life, in 1974. Her award-winning autobiography, Daddy’s Girl, was written prior to her first published novel but was not released until 1980 due to its controversial content at the time.
