Chester K. Steele was a pseudonym used by the Stratemeyer Syndicate, a publishing company founded by Edwin Stratemeyer. The Syndicate produced a number of book series for children and adults in the early twentieth century, employing a team of freelance authors to write standardized novels under various pen names. The Chester K. Steele books were mysteries aimed at an older audience than the Syndicate's well-known children's series such as the Rover Boys and the Bobbsey Twins. The first book in the series, The Mansion of Mystery, was written by Edward Stratemeyer, while the subsequent titles were ghostwritten.
