Chikamatsu, Monzaemon

Chikamatsu Monzaemon, real name Sugimori Nobumori, was a Japanese playwright known for his work in jōruri and kabuki. He is widely regarded as the greatest Japanese dramatist, with his most famous plays focusing on double-suicides of honor-bound lovers. His puppet plays include around 70 jidaimono and 24 sewamono, with domestic plays such as The Courier for Hell and The Love Suicides at Amijima considered his artistic achievements. His historical works, including The Battles of Coxinga, are viewed less positively.
