Christianna Brand, born Mary Christianna Milne in Malaya (1907-1988), spent most of her childhood in England and India. She held various jobs, including model, dancer, shop assistant, and governess, and wrote under pseudonyms Mary Ann Ashe, Annabel Jones, Mary Brand, Mary Roland, and China Thompson. She chaired the Crime Writers' Association from 1972 to 1973.
