Clemence Dane was the pen name of Winifred Ashton, born in London in 1888. She taught French in Geneva, studied art in London and Dresden, taught in Ireland, and performed on stage under the name Diana Curtis for five years. Her first novel, Regiment of Women, was published in 1917, followed by the successful play Legend and later novels including Wandering Star and The Flower Girls. She collaborated with Helen de Guerry Simpson on three detective novels—Enter Sir John, Printer's Devil, and Re-Enter Sir John—and was awarded a C.B.E. in 1953, dying in 1965.
