Daniel Clowes was born in Chicago, Illinois, to a mother who was Jewish and a father from a "reserved WASPish Pennsylvania" family. His upbringing was not religious. He attended the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where he completed high school in 1979, and later earned a BFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, in 1984. While at Pratt, he befriended fellow cartoonist Rick Altergott and co-founded the small-press comics publisher Look Mom Comics. Early in life, he experienced a strong emotional reaction to a comic book cover depicting a family dying of heat, and later received classic comic titles from his older brother, who also introduced him to the work of R. Crumb.
