Daniel Defoe, born Daniel Foe (1660-1731), was an English trader, writer, and journalist, who gained enduring fame for his novel Robinson Crusoe. He was one of the earliest proponents of the novel form, helping to popularize it in Britain, and is considered by some among the founders of the English novel. A prolific and versatile writer, he produced more than 500 books, pamphlets, and journals on topics including politics, crime, religion, marriage, psychology, and the supernatural, and was also a pioneer of economic journalism.
